When the surface structure of austenitic stainless steel has never been restored, an excess of ferritic particles will be present and will negatively affect the properties of the stainless steel. The presence of ferritic particles on the surface of stainless steel impairs the chromium oxide film, locally reducing corrosion resistance. If these particles are not seriously removed, there is a risk that the surface will oxidise.
