Cutting fluid filtration is probably the best return-on-investment in any machining workshop. Proper filtration can multiply your coolant's service life, improve surface finish and reduce tool wear.

Why filter your cutting fluid?

  • Chips and metal fines: particles causing scratches and abrasive wear on pumps
  • Tramp oil: slideway/hydraulic oils that destabilise the emulsion
  • Organic matter: waste that feeds bacterial growth
  • Grinding dust: abrasive particles from wheels
Fact: A well-filtered cutting fluid can last 6 months to over 2 years. Without filtration, typical change is every 4-8 weeks. The filtration equipment pays for itself in 2-3 avoided changes.

Filtration types

Gravity filtration with filter paper

Simplest and most economical. Coolant passes through a filter paper roll by gravity. Available in 25µ (fine) to 43µ (standard).

Pressure filtration (portable units)

Units with pump that draw coolant through a filter and return it clean. Flow rates from 30 to 100+ L/min.

Recommendation: Portable units like L30, L60 or L100 are the most versatile option. A single unit can serve an entire workshop.

What micron rating do I need?

  • 43µ: standard, sufficient for most turning and milling
  • 33µ: medium, good balance of filtration and speed
  • 25µ: fine, recommended for grinding and high-quality finishes
