Due to their chlorine content, CFC refrigerants such as R12 destroy the ozone layer. The ban on CFCs and halons led to the development of alternative refrigerants such as R134a, which is now widely used. Since mineral oils, polyalphaolefins and alkylbenzene oils are not miscible with R134a, the RENISO PAG refrigeration oil series was developed.
Most automotive and truck air-conditioning systems use Japanese- or US-manufactured compressors and R134a refrigerant. These compressors require synthetic polyglycol-based refrigeration oils such as RENISO PAG 46, which has excellent miscibility and compatibility with R134a.
RENISO PAG 46 is based on polar polyglycols. The structure of polyglycols makes them hygroscopic, meaning that they absorb moisture. Therefore, containers must always be kept tightly closed, nitrogen should be used to blanket the refrigeration oil, and drums should be stored in dry, air-conditioned rooms.
